Burn the Ships

Genesis 19:26
But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

I have mentioned before my favorite song is Burn the Ships by for King and Country. Part of the lyrics state, “So light a match, leave the past, burn the ships and don’t you look back.” See official video here: https://youtu.be/pOVrOuKVBuY

The idea of burn the ships means to leave yourself no other option but to move on to what you want to achieve. It is based on the 1519 Captain Hernán Cortés , who landed in Veracruz to begin his great conquest. Upon arriving, he reportedly gave an order to his men to burn the ships in which they arrived. In essence, he gave them no other option but to succeed at the goal of conquering.

Sometimes, God has us burn our ships. He knows if we continue to hold on to the crutch of the past, we will never reach out to conquer our future. So, build a fire, light a match and don’t you dare look back!

Lord I want to burn my ships. Help me to not look back. ~amen

Trust

Jeremiah 29:11
11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

God has a plan, but do you trust Him? Those plans are to prosper you, buy do you trust Him? Those plans are not to harm you, but do you trust Him? They are plans to give. You hope, but do you trust Him? His plans are to give you a future, but do you trust Him?

Don’t fly by those questions so quickly. Don’t just give them lip service. Take a long look and meditate on them. Be honest with yourself. Because if you answered yes to all of them, your life should be going by without a care in the world and nothing ever shakes you.

I for one can answer all of those questions in one and only one way. I want to trust You all of the time Lord, but I am human. Sometimes, I let my human get in the way. Thankfully, God’s answer is still always the same. It’s Ok, because even on those days you struggle to trust me, I still know the plans I have for you. They are still plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Lord, thank You for still loving me, even on those days I doubt You. ~amen

Don’t Be an Old Goat

John 5:5-9
5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” 7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,

Are you done yet? Are you done listening to the lies? Are you done giving the excuses? Are you done blaming others? Are you done with the “what-ifs” or “buts”. Can you move on now? Well, then get up and walk!

I can’t tell you how many times God has this conversation with me. I get stuck in my problems and begin to throw a temper tantrum. I am ready to plead my case before the Lord about how unfair life is and it isn’t my fault. I have a million excuses. I have believed all the lies. I can “but” better than any old goat!

God is there to see me through all of my crying and ranting and raving. He listens to every word. Then His simple reply is always, “Can we move on now?” It is time to MOVE and not just wallow here in my misery. Sometimes I have other work to do and sometimes it is just letting go and letting God take over. Either way, it never means stay. It always means MOVE!

Lord, I don’t want to be an old goat. I am done with my buts and excuses. I am ready to MOVE! ~amen

Look to Tomorrow

Artist Unknown

Isaiah 43:18-19
18 “Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
19 See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland.

Besides this blog, I also do a personal bible sketch of a verse of the day. Today’s verse happened to go great with this one. “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is our faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23). Every morning we can choose to let yesterday go and move on to today. Every night when our head hits the pillow we can choose to dwell on what went wrong today or we can count our blessings and move on to a bright new morning waiting for us.

God is always on the move. He does not stall out. His blessings are always in the works and heading your way. He has ways in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland being built for you right now. “The Lord is good to those whose hope in in him, to the one who seeks him” (Lamentations 3:25).

My hope remains in You, Lord. I know you will make a path that leads to exactly where I need to go. I will not look back. ~Amen

A New Pair of Shoes

Luke 9:61-62
61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” 62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

I may not be a farmer, but I even know when you are working a plow you have to look forward to where you are going and not where you have been if you want nice straight rows. Our lives are much like that scenario. We can’t move on, if we are stuck in the past. I am not saying you can’t hang on to memories and keepsakes. I am saying you have to learn to let them go and not saddle you down. You can use them to catapult you into a new adventure. You can even let them support you along the journey. But you absolutely cannot let them keep you where you are.

I told a friend today she needs to let go of her old comfy shoes. I meant she needed to move on to her next adventure. I mean you can’t try on a new pair of shoes while your feet are still in your comfy old ones.

Lord, help me let go of the past so I can move on to the future You have for me. ~amen

Enjoy Your Story

Philippians 3:12-14
12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

I love a good book. My daughter and I take turns every month finding a book we can both read and then discuss. She is a historical fiction kind of girl and I am more the cozy mystery type. But like any other genre you may want to read, books would not be nearly as much fun if you opened page one started to read then turned to page two and found the ending. That whole idea of intro, plot, climax, and conclusion is what keeps you reading.

I think sometimes in our lives, we concentrate too much on the beginning and ending and forget about the journey. Every part of our life has an intro, plot, climax, and conclusion. There are lots of twists and turns. When one chapter ends we start the next one. The important part is to keep reading! Today is but a single page in this chapter of your life.

Lord, help me learn to enjoy the journey and not try to string together a bunch of endings. ~amen

Decision Time!

Proverbs 4:26

26 Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways.

It is frightening to make decisions to move on to something else. I don’t care if it is buying a new home or car, or moving to a new job maybe even in a new city, state or country. You always want to make sure you are on the right path. You tend to question everything. Fear rises up asking you constantly if you are doing the right thing.

Believe it or not this verse from Proverbs has some pretty sound advice for these struggles. Any decision in our lives, small or large, requires us to give careful thought. Pray about it. Get sound advice from other strong faithful Christians. Don’t rush into anything. God will show you the path to take or not take when the time is right. Trust your faith in Him. When you are tuned into God, you got the best “gut instinct” there is! And when it is time, move along the path!

Lord, thank You for being there for me for every decision I make. I know you will lead me down the right path. ~amen

New Adventure

Psalms 73:26
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

I have felt a shift in my life over the past year, There is a tug on my spirit to head a new direction. I am familiar with this restless spirit. I have heard it a few times in my life. It starts with a desire to do something, then moves to. God making me very uncomfortable where I am. Soon, I am on my knees crying out to Him seeing no way out.. Then at just the right moment, doors that I never knew existed fly open miraculously. All I have to do is walk through.

During the travel, I always feel my world crumbling around me.. i feel my flesh and heart failing. There is nothing I can do but cling to God’s strength and let Him carry me to the end.

The fun part is looking back. I finally get to see the entire puzzle. Things that I went through start making sense. Not that I don’t wish I could have skipped some parts, but I see the purpose. As the old poem says, I can see the two footprints in the sand. Then I see where they become one. Those were the days the Lord carried me through.

Lord, You are my strength. I will depend on You to see me to my next adventure. ~amen

Seek Peace

Psalms 37:37
Consider the blameless, observe the upright; a future awaits those who seek peace.

It is hard to know when keeping silent is seeking peace. Solomon was so write when he wrote there is a time for everything. Staying silent can often end a quarrel that is getting you nowhere. There are also times that we must speak up and fight for peace.

Peace can come in the form of negotiation. However, when that negotiation means giving up rights, morals, boundaries or watering down what is right that is not seeking piece either. We may need to concede or we may need to stand our ground. Both can lead to peace.

The true key to finding peace is in this verse. We must seek it! We must go to the source of peace and ask Him what to do to find it. God is willing and able to grant those peace who search for it with all their heart.

Thank You Lord for giving peace to those who seek it! ~amen

Self Talk

Zephaniah 3:15
15 The LORD has taken away your punishment, he has turned back your enemy. The LORD, the King of Israel, is with you; never again will you fear any harm.

I am going to get a little pushy today. Read today’s verse. Now say it out loud. A little louder please! Write today’s verse and carry it with you all day. Maybe write it several times and put it up where you will see it. Then read it again and again! Read it until you believe it. No ifs, buts, or well you don’t know my circumstances Tabetha. God said it. He meant it and that is that!

You are saved! He has totally triumphed over Satan! God is with you always! You will never again fear harm! Doesn’t say you won’t face your enemy. Doesn’t say you won’t face harm or fear, you most certainly will. What it does say is face it down knowing YOU will win because of what GOD has already and continues to do for you.

By the way, this is not me standing on my stage wagging a finger at you. This is me looking in the mirror wagging my finger at myself! You just happen to be close enough to here.

Lord, I am so thankful that You have saved me and put Satan in his place. ~amen
