I Will Praise Thee

Psalms 86:12-13
12 I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever. 13 For great is your love toward me; you have delivered me from the depths, from the realm of the dead.

I have always identified with David in the bible. Just read his portion of Psalms and you quickly figure out this man dealt with depression. His descriptions of the pit, depths, and realm of the dead are spot on to falling into a deep depression for me. As a matter of fact, when I feel myself sliding I often think, “Here we go again David. I know you made it through and so I am holding on to the faith that I will too!”

In those moments of pain, it is so hard to praise God will all your heart. You struggle and can’t feel the love God has for you. Just because you can’t feel it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Sometimes you have to do the fake it ‘til you make it dance. Believe me, you are not alone in these feelings. Been there, done that, and own the t-shirt! I once told a friend who was going through a rough time, “When you get to that pit, look on the wall. I scratched my name there to remind you that you aren’t alone.”

If you find yourself on that dark path or even sitting in the depths, from the realm of the dead, take a deep breath. With whatever ounce of energy you have left, look up. Praise the Lord your God with whatever is left of your heart; glorify in the fact that even though you can’t feel it right now, He loves you and he will deliver you from the depths, from the realm of the dead.

Lord, thank You for delivering me and loving me even when I can’t see it or feel it. ~amen

Thank You

Daniel 2:23
I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors:
You have given me wisdom and power,
you have made known to me what we asked of you,
you have made known to us the dream of the king.”

We don’t have to dream about the King. We know Him personally! Daniel was still holding on to the coming Messiah and King that would save Israel. Jesus fulfilled that prophecy. We praise God for our salvation through Jesus.

We can also praise God for wisdom and power He sends through the Holy Spirit. Like our relationship with Christ, we have the honor of a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit. He is our guide, our connection, our peace, hope, and faith. We praise God for the Holy Spirit.

Just like Daniel, we have much to be thankful for every single day. Don’t forget to let God know just how much you appreciate Him. He loves you so much more than you will ever understand. Show Him some of that love back by simply saying, “Thank You, God!”

Lord, I love You and want to thank You for just being YOU! ~AMEN

Shalom

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
Colossians 3:15-16

Amen! Yep, that is my reaction to reading today’s verses. I mean it is laid out in the most beautiful prayer right there for you. Don’t you just love those “cheater” prayers? OK, there is no such thing as cheater prayer. Finding scripture to pray when your heart is full of confusion or pain is miraculous!

Today, I am filled with anxiety. No new place for me. You would think I would be full of peace there because it is so familiar. Then, I guess that would defeat the thought of being anxious🤦🏻‍♀️. These verses are a go-to for me when I feel that anxiety, depression, or PTSD creeping into my mind. No, it doesn’t always make it go away, but it does help me recognize what is going on so I can get through it.

As we enter the holiday season, emotions will rise and fall very quickly. Memories, loss, stress, overwhelmed and a lot of other feelings start creeping in on you. Pocket these verses. Memorize them, highlight and bookmark them. Turn to them and use them as your prayer. No, the emotions may not go away immediately, but focus on them. I promise they will get you through them.

Lord, thank you for your peace beyond understanding. Thank you for understanding when I can’t find peace! ~amen

Smile!

Hebrews 13:15-16
15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. 16 And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Want to know a cheap thing you can always give away? A smile! Unfortunately with the mask restrictions we have to step up our game and actually open our lips. Do you know when you are being kind and courteous you are showing God’s love? You are pleasing God by doing good and sharing of yourself.

People try and tell you it doesn’t take much time or effort to over a hello, please, or thank you. Let’s be real for a moment. It can sometimes take a LOT of effort and when you are rushed and time is precious it can feel like it takes up your time. I am sure all of us have not felt so pleasant waiting in a drive-thru that took 20 minutes to get your meal. Maybe we should talk about that guy doing 40 in a 50 in front of you when you are running late.

Believe it or not, being nice is a sacrifice. You are sacrificing yourself, your pride, your me first thoughts. So let’s take the time to sacrifice for each other today. It will make this world a much friendlier place. It will definitely bring a smile to God’s face.

Lord, help me share a smile today. ~amen

Stoke the Fire

Hebrews 12:28-29
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.”

There must be more than this
O breath of God, come breathe within
There must be more than this
Spirit of God, we wait for you
Fill us a new, we pray
Fill us a new, we pray
Consuming fire
Fan into flame
A passion for your name
Spirit of God
Would You fall in this place
Lord have your way
Lord have your way with us
~Hillsong United “Consuming Fire”

Our churches could use a dose of that consuming fire today. To fill those churches with the fire it starts with you and me. The slightest spark can ignite an inferno, just ask California. So, my prayer is simple for each of us today. Please Lord, rain down with your fire and fill us to overflowing.

Lord, Your church needs Your fire. Start by stoking me. ~amen

Reject

1 Timothy 4:4-5
For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.

Everything that has been created by God has to be good because God is good. It is what we do with these things that taints them and makes them evil or wrong. We brought sin into this world, not God.

You are not a reject. You are not stupid, fat, ugly, not enough, or any other label someone has thrust upon you. God made you. You are good. You have sinned, you have been a sinner, and yes, you will make more mistakes. However please remember God has not rejected you.

Yes, people in your life have rejected you. There will be more yet to come. But do not think for one minute that you are rejected by God. It is also very important you do not reject yourself.

Be thankful for every single breath you take. God has given you that breath because He loves you and is not finished with you yet. You have not finished your journey here on Earth. None of our lives are perfect, but they are blessed. I was made by God. I am good and He will not reject me. He is thankful for me and I am very thankful for Him!

I am not a reject and Lord, for that, I am truly thankful. ~amen

Generosity

2 Corinthians 9:11
You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

What do you think of when you hear the word generosity? I would guess the most common thought is money or finances. I am not sure but it may be because we live in a very money-driven world. Some people would say they have no way of being generous. There is so much more than money!

You are the hottest commodity you own. Your time and talents are always needed. Before you say I have no talent, you are wrong. God has given everyone gifts. You may have not discovered yours, but you have them. Pray for God to reveal them. Ask friends and family what they might be, you just might be surprised.

My point is we all have things to offer. We can and should share our talents generously. This is how we support each other. This is how we share God’s love with the world. So, go out and be generous!

Lord thank you for giving me the ability to share the talents, You have given me, with others. ~amen

Refocus

Colossians 4:2
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

You want to change your world? You want to find peace and happiness? I have a thought for you. Devote yourself to prayer, being watchful and thankful! I am not trying to preach at you or give you a pep talk. I am just making a suggestion.

Some of you may be thinking, yeah but Tabetha, you have no idea what I am going through and you are right. I don’t know. What I do know is refocussing your mind can change your outlook no matter what it is you are facing. It will not solve or take away the issue, but it will help you walk through it. It may not take away the pain, anger, or frustration you are feeling, but it will help you cope with it. It will help you survive it.

God is a big boy. He can handle your screaming and yelling. He understands your pain. He watched his son be beaten and crucified. He knows pain. Take some time with Him. Scream out your prayer if you have to it is fine. Keep your eyes up and look for the light in the darkness. Search for it. Don’t stop. Be thankful for every small thing you can find, even if it is you have a God who will not leave your side, even when all you can do is yell at Him because you don’t understand the pain.

Lord, I want to focus on You, even in my pain. Thank You for being there to listen to me scream and helping me to refocus. ~amen

Labels

John 7:28-29
28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him, 29 but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.”

I love reading multiple bible translations when I study. I try to hit at least three. The Message Bible hit me hard today, particularly one part of the verses. “My true origin is in the One who sent me, and you don’t know him at all. I come from him—that’s how I know him. He sent me here.” My true origin, my identity is in Christ NOT any of the labels people try to put on me!

Yes, I am a sister, daughter, mother, grandmother, aunt, an in-law, teacher, writer, artist, college graduate, suicide survivor, and many other names. However, each of those is a part of me. They are not me. Just like when others (or I) call me dumb, stupid, lazy, weak, fat, old, among other things, they are not who I am. I have faults and I do make mistakes, but my identity is not defined by labels.

My identity is in Christ. I was made by Him and for a purpose. It is His love and light that shines in me. It is Him that I live for and seek to please every single moment. So pass out the labels. They aren’t sticking to me!

Lord, remind me when the world tries to label me, my identity is in You! ~amen

Nitpickers

John 7:24
Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”

I love today’s verse in the Message Bible “Don’t be nitpickers; use your head—and heart!—to discern what is right, to test what is authentically right.” I am pretty sure this is where I say, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”

I remember a trip we took, when I was a kid, to Galveston, Texas. My parents, grandparents, and I had been driving and sightseeing all day. We decided to stop for lunch. As any good midwestern tourist down south in January, we were dressed in shorts and t-shirts. We pulled over to this shack. On the outside, you could tell it had weathered the many storms that had tried to destroy this little island. We assumed we would go in and grab some fish and chips or burgers. That is NOT what greeted us inside!

We were met by a man in a tux who seated us at a table with fine linen, silver, and china. Our meals were brought out in several courses. I remember feeling like royalty. We were the only ones there and our waiter was the nicest man. Oh, and yes the food was awesome.

We can’t judge people or circumstances by what we see. We can’t stick our noses in the air and get all nitpicky. We have to open our hearts and eyes. Then we can see the whole picture. Aren’t you glad God looks at you that way too?

Lord, help me learn to not judge people or circumstances by their covers. ~amen
