Exam Time!

Job 23:10
When He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.

According to Jesus Himself, Satan has to ask permission (Luke 22:31-32). In the middle of our turmoil of true testing, if we could only remember this fact, what a power we could tap To stop and go, “WAIT A MINUTE! Satan you have no power here. You had to lay out your plan before God. This means He already has the escape route planned out for me. He also knows and trusts me enough to let you do this to me. So, obviously, I have the power through Him to overcome it.”

Now, before you go all, but Tabetha, how could God a loving God allow this or that to happen to people. Let me remind you of Job and Jesus, Himself. Do you for one moment consider yourself any better than either of them? So, why are you so surprised when trials head your way or others around you? I also don’t believe everything we go through is a test or trial from God or Satan for that matter. Things in life do just happen. I don’t pretend to know why. I do know that whatever gets thrown at you in life, God is there! He has promised to walk through it with you.

I know the test seems overwhelming, exhausting, heartbreaking, and impossible to pass. But aren’t you glad you are sitting next to the Guy with all the right answers and He wants you to cheat off of Him to earn that gold star?

Lord, I hate exams, but I know with You at myself, I will pass them and earn my gold star! ~amen

I AM

John 14:6
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

When I read today’s verse, I was reminded of Exodus 3:13-14: Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”

God and Jesus are both using the words ‘I am’ to describe themselves. I have always loved that name for God. I know some people get frustrated by it. I often wondered if Moses rolled his eyes and thought, “Yeah and that is going to go over well.” Then there were the Israelites. What did they think? Were they waiting for Moses to finish the statement? Where they like, “Ok, you are whom?”

So, why do I love that name so much? God’s name is an open name, a fill-in-the-blank with your need. Do you need hope? I am hope (1 Tim 1:1). Do you need peace? I am peace (Eph 2:14). Do you need guidance? I am the way, truth, and life (John 14:6)

Whatever you need today, don’t forget God is the Great I Am and so is Jesus Christ! He can fill your every need!

Lord, I am so thankful You are “The Great I Am”! ~amen

Wanna Freak Satan Out?

James 5:16
The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

We have a very powerful weapon that we do not use nearly as much as we should. It is called prayer. I am not even talking about those long-winded King James prayers with all the thees and thous. Not that you can’t pray that way, more power to you. I am also not talking about the way we only pray in church on Sunday prayers either. I am not even talking about those down on your knees in your own personal “prayer closet” Now that is a good prayer and prayer time though! Just remember everyone’s closet looks different. Nope, I am not really talking about any of these in particular. As a matter of fact, I am talking about any and all communication you have with God ALL DAY LONG!

Yes, I said all day long. Do you want to be effective and fervent? You need to realize God is there for you to talk to you all day. Do you want your prayers to avail much? Realize all that chit-chat those gone in your head all day (I know it is happening) can be directed right to God.

There is nothing that is going to make Satan quake in his boots like the thought that you know there is no exact place or time that you can talk to God. When you realize you can be in constant communication with God, Satan is going to FREAK!

Lord, let’s talk all the time and watch Satan squirm! ~amen

Who’s Worried?

Psalm 42:5
Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

We all know that there are lots of outside issues that can cause stress. Things like your job or lack of one, death of a loved one, divorce, financial obligations, chronic illness, taking care of an elderly, or sick loved one and even traumatic events can affect you. Emotional problems like depression, anxiety, anger, grief, guilt, and low self-esteem can also be added to this list. Sometimes our stress comes from within like fear, uncertainty, attitudes, perceptions, unrealistic expectations, and even just change.

I have something that complicates, increases, strengthens, and just down makes all of these stressors worse. News Flash: “Worry causes undue stress on the body!” We have enough in our lives that cause stress. We don’t need to complicate it by worrying.

Modern medicine tells us worrying causes headache, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, upset stomach, irritability, not to mention more serious health issues. Ancient medicine tells us there is a simple cure, stop worrying. The psalmist today was starting to worry about life, but then he reminded himself, wait I know what to do, believe in God. Meditating on God leaves no room to concentrate on the stress. My prescription, take our God and see Him every morning!

Lord, help me remember to meditate on You, letting go of the worries of life. ~amen

I’m Not Listening!

1 Corinthians 15:55
“Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”

Satan says you are worthless, barren, bogus, futile, inconsequential, ineffective, insignificant, meaningless, mediocre, pointless, unimportant, unproductive, unprofitable, unusable, useless, abandoned, abject, base, cheap, contemptible, counterproductive, despicable, empty, good-for-nothing, ignoble, ineffectual, inferior, inutile, miserable, no-account, no-good, nothing, nugatory, paltry, poor, profitless, sterile, trashy, trifling, trivial, unavailing, unessential, valueless, waste, wretched.

God says, “You are mine!”

Satan is a liar and a thief.

God is your heavenly Father that loves You so much He sent His Son to die for your sins so you can be with Him forever. His Son unlocked hell and took the keys of death away from Satan.

Who are you going to listen to today? Which voice are you going to take seriously? I think it is time to look Satan square in the face and remind him, that he is a liar, a thief, and doesn’t even have to keys to his own house. If you want to throw in a few of the words above that he called you, feel free!

Lord, I am listening to You! Thank You for standing up for me. ~amen

By the Book, No Exceptions

Romans 10:13
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Here we go again. Today I have another, “EVERYONE” verse for you. So, let’s look at the official meaning of the word. As a matter of fact, let’s break it down first.

Definition of every
being each individual or part of a group without exception

Definition of body:
a human being : PERSON

Put that together and we a human being or person who is part of a group without exception. So, everyone, without exception who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Everyone is given a chance to be saved. God doesn’t exclude anyone.

Are you jumping up and down screaming hallelujah right now? You should be because that means you are not an exception either. Your past means nothing to God. Your habits, hangups, mistakes, and bad decisions are meaningless. So, stop letting Satan beat you up with them. You are an everyone. You have called on the name of the Lord. He has saved you! Take this knowledge and throw the books at Satan, the bible and the dictionary!

Dear God, thank you for making no exceptions to everyone! ~amen

The Defense Rests!

Hebrews 7:25
Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

One of my favorite TV shows is Perry Mason. No, I am not old enough to have seen its original run, but I have watched it every other way I can. Like many others, my favorite part is where Hamilton Burger, the prosecutor, thinks he has everything tied up neatly and nicely and then Perry gets that look in his eye. He looks over at Della, his secretary, or Paul Drake, his investigator, and quietly asks them a question. Then you see that famous little grin on his face. You know, and so does Burger, that Perry has the answer. He wins the case! The guilty party is found out and all is right with the world again, at least until the next episode.

I often picture today’s verse playing out much like this courtroom drama. Satan is giving his best argument against me. He thinks he has all my sins tied up in a neat little bow. I sit there sweating it out while the evidence piles up before the judge, God. I just know this is not going to end well. Then I look over and there sets my defense. Jesus has taken my case and He has that look in His eye. He asks me one simple question. “Do you believe in me and my sacrifice I made for all sins on the cross?” I reply with a simple yes. Then there it is, that smile! He looks at God and simply raises His scarred hands and it is done. The trial is over. Satan has lost once
again!

Lord, thank You for taking and pleading my case. ~amen

Plans!

Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

I know people throw this verse around at the most insensitive time. Oh, they mean well, but it certainly does not help. It seems to become the blanket answer when someone is facing the death of a loved one, a divorce, loss of a job, or even a devastating medical diagnosis. It comes across as God is Ok with your pain. It is all a part of God’s plan to see you in this position. I don’t believe that for one minute. I think God hurts when we hurt. God cries when we cry. My God loves me and promises to see me through any pain that comes our way.

That is the key. God sees us through problems. No matter what Satan throws at us, God is there to get us through. No matter what our situation is today, God is there to sit with us in the muck. When we are ready to get up and move on, He is there too. In all things, God has a plan to work for the good. Sometimes that plan is to get us around things and other times it is to get us through them. The point of this verse is God always has a plan.

God doesn’t like to see us in pain, but pain is a part of living. He knew that when sin and death entered this world we would go through pain. So, He made plans to get us through it all. It may not feel like it today, but the plans are there and ready when you are.

I trust You, Lord. I know tomorrow will come and Your plan is in place and working to get me through today. ~amen

Stand

1 Corinthians 15:1
Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand.

Max Lucado talked about three words that rocked his world a few years back (Outlive Your Life). The questions were as follows:

  1. Had you been a German Christian during WWII, would you have taken a stand against Hitler?
  2. Had you lived in the South during the civil rights conflict, would you have taken a stand against racism?
  3. When your grandchildren discover you lived during a day in which 1.75 billion people were poor and 1 billion were hungry, how will they judge your response?

As he pointed out, the first two are easy to say yes, because they were in the past, but what about taking a stand today. That third question can certainly hit you where it hits. Are you prepared to take your stand today where it is needed? It might be easy to say yes to things that seem huge in politics or world policies. How good are you at taking a stand when facing friends or family members, or when no one stands with you?

Paul isn’t just reminding the Corinthians in this verse. He is reaching out to us today as well. He is reminding us of the gospel that is preached to us. That is the same
gospel we must choose to take our stand on and for today.

Lord, You took a stand for me on that cross. Today I choose to take a stand for You! ~amen

ALL

Romans 3:23-24
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

There is one tiny three-letter word that we tend to forget. We forget it when we realize it includes us. We don’t like that we are wrong. We don’t like to admit that we are no better than other people. We also look right past it when we see others’ faults and don’t want to offer them grace. Once again, we don’t want to admit that we aren’t better than them. Let’s face it we don’t like the word ‘all’ because we are naturally arrogant.

We look at this verse and see ‘all’ used twice. The first time it reminds us that we have all sinned. We have all messed up. We all have faults, bad habits, and make bad choices. Look up and notice all the people around you right now. Look at all the people who are on TV, driving by, or inhabiting the pictures you have hanging around. All have sinned, including you.

Then there is the other ‘all’. God offers all of us grace through Christ’s death on the cross. We all have the chance to wipe those sins away. We all have a chance to be forgiven for all of those bad choices. Do that look around lesson again, they are all able to be free.

All means everyone has a chance. Everyone is loved by God. Everyone can be saved and set free. Not everyone will take this opportunity, but it is offered to everyone. You are part of that all. Will you take that opportunity?

Lord, I am so thankful to be part of ALL! ~amen
