Steadfast

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.

When I read today’s verse in Isaiah, I got stuck on the word steadfast. To be honest, my stomach dropped and I became nervous. I can think of so many times I don’t feel so steadfast in my mind. My life overwhelms me. My anxiety and panic set in or my depression just plain takes over. I don’t feel so steadfast. I certainly don’t feel at peace. BUT I still trust in God.

Being steadfast is tied to the trust in God, not the trust in your own mind. Our minds are so capable of making up things that are not there. We perceive things based on our own experiences and emotions. I guess what I am saying is there is nothing steadfast about us.

However, we can put our trust in God. We can continue to have faith that no matter what our mind is trying to tell us God is still in control. When we choose to rely on God and not our own feeble circumstances, we will find the perfect peace. A peace that keeps us steady with peace in any storm.

Lord, I know when my world is full of nothing but chaos if I can just stay steadfast in trusting you, You will find surround me in peace. ~amen

Zap Them Lord!

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

No, praying, “Lord zap them!” does not count as praying for someone. As a matter of fact, I believe we can agree that Jesus had many enemies. If you recall some of His final words were, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:24). Now, I do need to mention here that David, on the other hand, in Psalms has a few zap them prayers. But in His defense, he had not been told to love others as yourself (Matthew 22:39).

Praying for someone who has hurt you or hurt someone you love is not easy. Praying for the person in charge that you did not vote for instead of tearing them down is not easy. But it is freeing. It is also a secret weapon of zap them, Lord. However, you are asking God to zap them with love, grace, and wisdom. You are asking God to open their eyes and help change their hearts. Along the way, God opens your eyes and changes your heart. Freeing you from all the hatred you are burdened with. So yes, go ahead and ask God to zap your enemies with blessings so that He can zap you too.

Lord, I hold grudges. Instead, I want to zap my enemies with blessings Lord. You show me grace and love Lord. Now I want to pass it on to all people. ~amen

Competent

2 Corinthians 3:6

He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

You are competent! Let me say that again. YOU ARE COMPETENT. Now, I want you to repeat that several times in your own head. Heck, say it out loud and proud. Don’t let Satan convince you otherwise. Don’t let him tell you that you have screwed up one too many times and God does not want you. THIS IS JUST NOT TRUE!

There is a reason we fall under the Spirit and not the letter, meaning the laws of the Old Testament. It is because we now have grace to cover our mistakes. To be under the Spirit means we follow two simple laws instead of the original ten. We love God with all our hearts, minds, and spirits. We love others as ourselves. Read those two again. Do you realize if you follow those, you will not commit the other ten?

The Old Testament was filled with rules of what not to do. The New Testament is filled with the map on how to not break those rules and grace when we get off the beaten path. You are competent to read the map and you have the Holy Spirit to be your GPS when you need a little, “Recalculating”!

Lord, in you I am made competent and I will follow the Spirit where He leads. ~amen

Victory in Jesus!

Isaiah 55:12

You will go out in joy
and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and hills
will burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the field
will clap their hands.

Yep, you’ve got this! No matter what you are up against today, you have already won the battle. I am not saying the battle is going to be easy or over soon. What I am saying is you can hold your head high the entire time because you are going to win.

Every battle we face can quickly become overwhelming when we focus on the problem it is causing in our lives. When we take a moment to stand back and take a breath, we can often see it for the little pain in the neck it really is.

I can hear you all. I know you may be facing no job, cancer, death of a loved one, or any number of life-changing events. I have been there and I am sure I will be there again. What I am trying to remind us all is God is still with us. He is ready to walk through it all. When we remember that peace and joy can shine on us again. If you listen carefully, you might even hear the victory song burst from the mountains and hills. Then you can take your bow to the clapping trees. Victory!

Because of You, Lord, we have the victory! Today, I choose to walk in it! ~amen

From Rejected to Accepted

1 Peter 2:9-10

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

I love how the Message Bible translates 1 Peter 2:9-10.

“But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you—from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.”

Did you know you matter? You are not only recognized by God, you were chosen! You have been given a job to do and it is very important. It doesn’t matter what others think of you. It doesn’t matter what you look like, how much money you make, or even what you drive. You are chosen by God and a part of a holy people. You matter! You matter to God!

So, you need to straighten that crown and raise your head high today. You look Satan right in the eyes and let him know just who you are God’s special possession. You have gone from rejected to accepted!

Lord, I thank you for choosing me to be one of Your special possessions. ~amen

The Eyes of Your Heart

Ephesians 1:18
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,

I am not sure if the Michael W. Smith song, “Open the Eyes of My Heart Lord” is based on this verse but it certainly goes along with it. If you have never heard I would definitely recommend it. However, neither the verse of the song lyrics really hit me like they did today.

This prayer is really profound to me. I know how quickly anxiety and depression can sneak up to surround me. My life can feel totally overwhelmed. The simple words open the eyes of my heart Lord can totally change my perspective.

How about when you are feeling frustrated or angry? Asking God to help you see past any feeling that is clouding your judgment is powerful. It is literally asking Him to let you see what He sees. Let you see the truth.

So the next time an emotion threatens to boil up and cause problems, try praying, “open the eyes of my heart, Lord.” You just might be surprised at how clear your vision becomes.

Lord, today I ask you to open the eyes of my heart so I can see what You need me to see. ~Amen
