John 1:14-16
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”) 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.
In Jesus’ time, an older person was given respect and regarded as greater than a younger one. So, everyone would have ranked Jesus lower in terms of respect than John, because he was older. As a matter of fact, there was lots of grumbling among John’s followers. John the Baptist, however, explained Jesus existed long before John was born on Earth. Jesus was the man, John had been prophesying about during his ministry. Jesus was the Son of God, the Messiah, and King. He deserved all of the respect.
Jesus still deserves all of our respect all of the time. Christmas is a wonderful time, but Jesus shouldn’t get packed away with the decorations in January. He was born, lived, died, resurrected, and then ascended back into Heaven, so we could live with grace and someday be with Him in Heaven forever. Yes, spend Christmas celebrating His birth, but spend the rest of the year celebrating His love for you all year round, every year!
Lord, I want to always show You the respect that You deserve. ~amen
